After two years of combing through records related to already documented underground military bases, Fitts says she also looked into “allegations” of a wider bunker network.

Comparing her research against the missing cash, Fitts said she was able to make a “guess” about how many facilities there really are.

She claimed the 170 only applied to bases on US soil and around its coastline – alleging that more exist across the world.

And the bases are connected by an elaborate transportation system, she added, while claiming they are powered by a secret energy system known only to the military.

“I’m convinced that this energy exists. If you look at a lot of the really fast ships, flying around the planet, they’re not using classical electricity,” she said, in an apparent reference to a spate of bizarre unidentified aerial phenomena supposedly flying around the skies in recent years.

Those alleged bases are used not just as doomsday bunkers for the elites, she stated, but also as places for the government to operate “secret” operations like a “secret space program.”

The nuclear subterrene (rhymes with 'submarine') was designed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico. A number of patents were filed by scientists at Los Alamos, a few federal technical documents were written - and then the whole thing just sort of faded away.

Nuclear subterrenes work by melting their way through the rock and soil, actually vitrifying it as they go, and leaving a neat, solidly glass-lined tunnel behind them.

The heat is supplied by a compact nuclear reactor that circulates liquid lithium from the reactor core to the tunnel face, where it melts the rock. In the process of melting the rock the lithium loses some of its heat. It is then circulated back along the exterior of the tunneling machine to help cool the vitrified rock as the tunneling machine forces its way forward. The cooled lithium then circulates back to the reactor where the whole cycle starts over. In this way the nuclear subterrene slices through the rock like a nuclear powered, 2,000 degree Fahrenheit (1,100 Celsius) earthworm, boring its way deep underground.

The United States Atomic Energy Commission and the United States Energy Research and Development Administration took out Patents in the 1970s for nuclear subterrenes. The first patent, in 1972 went to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

The nuclear subterrene has an advantage over mechanical TBMs in that it produces no muck that must be disposed of by conveyors, trains, trucks, etc. This greatly simplifies tunneling. If nuclear subterrenes actually exist (and I do not know if they do) their presence, and the tunnels they make, could be very hard to detect, for the simple reason that there would not be the tell-tale muck piles or tailings dumps that are associated with the conventional tunneling activities.

The 1972 patent makes this clear. It states:

"... (D)ebris may be disposed of as melted rock both as a lining for the hole and as a dispersal in cracks produced in the surrounding rock. The rock-melting drill is of a shape and is propelled under sufficient pressure to produce and extend cracks in solid rock radially around the bore by means of hydrostatic pressure developed in the molten rock ahead of the advancing rock drill penetrator. All melt not used in glass-lining the bore is forced into the cracks where it freezes and remains ...

"... Such a (vitreous) lining eliminates, in most cases, the expensive and cumbersome problem of debris elimination and at the same time achieves the advantage of a casing type of bore hole liner."

This 1975 patent further specifies that the machine is intended to excavate tunnels up to 12 meters in diameter or more. This means tunnels of 40 ft. or more in diameter. The kerf is the outside boundary of the tunnel wall that a boring machine gouges out as it bores through the ground or rock. So, in ordinary English, this machine will melt a circular boundary into the tunnel face. The melted rock will be forced to the outside of the tunnel by the tunnel machine, where it will form a hard, glassy tunnel lining (see the appropriate detail in the patent itself, as shown in Illustration 41). At the same time, mechanical tunnel boring equipment will grind up the rock and soil detached by the melted kerf and pass it to the rear of the machine for disposal by conveyor, slurry pipeline, etc.

And yet a third patent was issued to the United States Energy Research and Development Administration just 21 days later, on 27 May 1975 for a machine remarkably similar to the machine patented on 6 May 1975. The abstract describes:

Perhaps some of my readers have heard the same rumors that I have heard swirling in the UFO literature and on the UFO grapevine: stories of deep, secret, glass-walled tunnels excavated by laser powered tunneling machines. I do not know if these stories are true. If they are, however, it may be that the glass-walled tunnels are made by the nuclear subterrenes described in these patents. The careful reader will note that all of these patents were obtained by agencies of the United States government. Further, all but one of the inventors are from Los Alamos, New Mexico. Of course, Los Alamos National Lab is itself the subject of considerable rumors about underground tunnels and chambers, Little Greys or "EBEs", and various other covert goings-on.

A 1973 Los Alamos study entitled Systems and Cost Analysis for a Nuclear Subterrene Tunneling Machine: A Preliminary Study, concluded that nuclear subterrene tunneling machines (NSTMs) would be very cost effective, compared to conventional TBMs.

In 1975 the National Science Foundation commissioned another cost analysis of the nuclear subterrene. The A.A. Mathews Construction and Engineering Companyof Rockville, Maryland produced a comprehensive report with two, separate, lengthy appendices, one 235 and the other 328 pages.

A.A. Mathews calculated costs for constructing three different sized tunnels in the Southern California area in 1974. The three tunnel diameters were:

a) 3.05 meters (10 ft.)

b) 4.73 meters (15.5 ft.)

c) 6.25 meters (20.5 ft.)

Comparing the cost of using NSTMs to the cost of mechanical TBMs, A.A. Mathews determined:

Savings of 12 percent for the 4.73 meter (15.5 ft.) tunnel and 6 percent for the 6.25 meter (20.5 foot) tunnel were found to be possible using the NSTM as compared to current methods. A penalty of 30 percent was found for the 3.05 meter (10 foot) tunnel using the NSTM. The cost advantage for the NSTM results from the combination of,

(a) a capital rather than labor intensive system,

(b) formation of both initial support and final lining in conjunction with the excavation process.

It is noteworthy in the first place that the government commissioned such a lengthy and detailed analysis of the cost of operating a nuclear subterrenes. Just as intriguing is the fact that the study found that the tunnels in the 15 ft. to 20 ft. diameter range can be more economically excavated by NSTMs than by conventional TBMs.

This is precisely one of the regions of the West where there is rumored to be a secret tunnel system. Did the A.A. Mathews study represent part of the planning for an actual covert tunneling project that was subsequently carried out, when it was determined that it was more cost effective to use NSTMs than mechanical TBMs?

DigiSensory cameras predict crime before it happens

With DigiSensory Technologies’ sophisticated cameras and sensor systems, law enforcement agencies and transportation departments across the United States are now able to proactively monitor and respond to crimes or accidents as they unfold; the company’s Avista sensors process the images that its high-resolution camera records in real time and can automatically detect when a crime is occurring; when it senses something it will alert law enforcement officials instantly; the sensors can also assist transportation departments in analyzing traffic patterns in real time; the system could allow officials to change one way streets, design real time traffic signals, and multiple speed limits to make traffic flow more smoothly.

In 2009 the East Orange, New Jersey police department was the first U.S. agency to install DigiSensory’s Avista Smart Imaging Sensor system as part of its broader network of security cameras around the city.

The Avista sensors process the images that its high-resolution camera records in real time and can automatically detect when a crime is occurring. When it senses something it will alert law enforcement officials instantly.

Jose Cordero, the East Orange police director, says that the cameras have helped reduce response times from minutes to seconds.

“It’s no different from what we do on the street, but now we have a system in place that can look at our data and turn information into intelligence in real time,” Cordero said.

This is particularly critical as East Orange’s streets are riddled with gang and drug related violence.

When Cordero joined the force in 2004, he says East Orange had a crime rate fourteen times the national average. Since then, however, violent crime has dropped by two thirds, largely as a result of the department’s $1.4 million camera system.

In 2009 East Orange installed ten Avista Smart Cameras. These cameras have sensors that can identify behavioral patterns and actually predict when a crime is going to occur. This information is then stored in a database tied to geographic location so that it will be able to forecast where a crime is most likely to occur next.

“The system will predict when the next likely event will occur at these locations during these particular times during this particular day,” Cordero says.

According to their Web site, Avista sensors are “programmed to analyze the environment, recognize specific user defined patterns or profiles, classify profile as a threat category and warn or alert of common and specific elements of street crime and help solve crime by providing video footage of completed or potential crimes.”

Craig Primiani, vice president of sales of DigiSensory’s North America division, says the technology takes a “proactive approach to law enforcement, so that officers are alerted as an event occurs, rather than after.”

He explains that unlike existing video systems which simply record events and store them in an archive to be reviewed only after a crime occurs, Avista sensors analyze events as they occur.

Primiani says that DigiSensory’s technology is applicable beyond just law enforcement and can greatly assist transportation departments in analyzing traffic patterns.

DigiSensory is in the final stages of installing a traffic camera and sensor system for Washington D.C.’s Department of Transportation (DCDOT). The system will provide DCDOT with real time analysis of traffic patterns to predict commute times.

Primiani believes that the system has vast future potential.

“There’s so much information we can gather about traffic patterns. If D.C. had 1,000 of these they could do predictive analysis. They could make decisions on one way streets that change from one way in the morning to the other way at night, design real time traffic signals, and multiple speed limits,” he said.

In short, smart sensors can provide cities with “information to make real time traffic decision to make the city’s existing roads more effective.”

In addition, these traffic systems could be integrated with existing law enforcement security cameras and vice versa. So if someone is hit in an accident, the cameras could automatically alert emergency responders.

To allay critics who charge that the camera systems are too invasive or violate privacy laws, the company has built in privacy safeguards.

Primiani explains that, “We have the ability with a flick of a switch to black out the objects we are tracking.”

The sensors can outline an object and make its specific characteristics indistinguishable.

“For instance, if a car is going down the road, with existing systems we can see that it is a 1984 Chevy Nova, but we can block it so that we do not know what type of car it is. We’ll just know it’s a car and the same thing applies to humans,” he said.

David Young, a spokesman for the company, says that the technology has a broad appeal and can be used in many different situations.

“The technology has wide application in law enforcement, school safety, government institutional safety, crowd management, transportation departments, prisons and more. With bullying being one of the biggest problems occurring in American schools today, imagine if principals would be automatically notified of a potential incident moments after students began to loiter,” Young said.

Government agencies and business around the world have already taken notice of DigiSensory Avista predictive sensors.

Louis Vuitton stores in China have already installed these cameras, while the U.K. Olympic Organizing committee is considering implementing these systems for the London 2012 games.







East Orange installs surveillance cameras with computer chips that sense criminal activities, alerts police - March 18, 2010

N.J. -- First there were gunshot detectors, then surveillance cameras — both of which police credit with dramatic decreases in crime. Now East Orange has installed a state-of-the-art tracking system that may be able to snitch on bad behavior without human eyes.

Today, the city’s police department unveiled the new system that includes programmed sensors capable of identifying criminal behavior as it is happening.

Police Director Jose Cordero showed off the technology today at a press conference, at which over 200 public officials and international law enforcement agents were in attendance.

"We want to change the criminal mindset about wanting to commit the crime," Cordero said. "This is about real-time deterrence."

Cordero said the new system’s cameras, which have been installed throughout the city, have computer chips that automatically sense hundreds of suspicious scenarios and alert police.

For example, Cordero said, if two people approach an individual on the street, and the individual becomes evasive or tries to run away, the camera will alert operators of a possible robbery. The operators can view the area on their computers and dispatch the nearest officers within one second.

Cordero said the sensors do not recognize race, age or other factors that may lead to discrimination.

The cameras were developed by Australian company DigiSensory, which used the sensors in Sydney in 2008 when the pope came to visit, said the company’s chief executive officer Tarik Hammadou. The sensors are unique to the United States, and Cordero said they have mainly been used experimentally and have not been fully integrated into police tracking systems until now.

Hammadou contacted East Orange last year when he learned Cordero had installed gunshot detectors and surveillance cameras to reduce crime in 2004. The city has credited the technology, costing $1.8 million, with a more than 70 percent drop in crime between 2003 and 2008.

Police officials from around the world have taken an interest in East Orange. Last week, Brazilian government officials who are preparing for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics visited the city to learn how they could heighten security, Cordero said. Police director Ahmet Kirkpinak from Ankara, Turkey, came to the conference today, saying cities in his country were starting to develop surveillance technology.

"This is exactly what we want to do," Kirkpinak said. "This was a good opportunity to learn how this is done. (East Orange) is spending millions. They are doing it right."

But Dennis Kenney, a criminal justice professor at John Jay College, said using the technology as a law enforcement tool is a pipe dream.

"To argue that somehow it’s going to be able to distinguish the guy who’s going to the ATM and the robber at the ATM is a fantasy. The technology is just not sophisticated enough," Kenney said in a phone interview. "Basically, the citizens have to decide whether they feel comfortable being watched all the time."

British Military Attacks Drones With Huge Laser - Costs $13 Per Shot

Drones are increasingly menacing the skies above, whether as buzzing nuisances destroying a scenic locale’s peaceful vibes or wielded as a kamikaze drone spreading terror.

As such, world militaries are intensely interested in anti-drone weaponry right now. Take the latest demo from the British Armed Forces to take down these suckers: shooting them out of the blue with a powerful laser beam.

The country’s Ministry of Defense recently tested the DragonFire laser at a facility in Scotland, according to a statement, where it was able to successfully shoot down high speed drones that “fly up to 650 km/h [404 miles per hour] — twice the top speed of a Formula 1 car.”

A video posted by the UK Defense Journal shows the laser technology, developed by European defense firm MDBA, being deployed aboard Royal Navy ships so it can counter attack drones from would be adversaries.

“The accuracy is razor sharp,” a voiceover says in the video. “It can hit a £1 coin a kilometer away.”

The system’s also relatively thrifty to operate; it only cost $13 dollars to shoot a beam, compared to typical missiles which can be many times that amount.

That’s a huge plus in light of the problems that the US Navy encountered in the Red Sea, where it’s have been contending with attack drones from Houthi rebels in Yemen. In a nutshell, America has spent almost a billion dollars on missiles — up to $2.1 million dollars per launch — to shoot down relatively cheap drones launched by a ragtag army with little resources.

Because of the British laser’s effectiveness, the ministry awarded MDBA a $413.7 million contract to produce and deliver the DragonFire laser for use on Royal Navy ships. In the past, engineers developed combat lasers to take down flying objects just like drones, but they were unreliable and complex to use. But in recent years, advancements in engineering have made lasers for defense use way more robust and powerful, making them ready for battlefield operations.

And not a moment too soon — the war in Ukraine has revolutionized the use of drones for military use and increased its availability, complicating the defense strategies of many countries since drones are relatively inexpensive and easy to obtain and can be designed for versatile combat operations, from dropping bombs on targets to assassinating individuals.

To neutralize these buzzing machines, soldiers in the field have been using net guns and other tools. But a powerful laser beam could be a game changer.

DragonFire, a new laser defense system, has been successfully tested in the UK and proved its accuracy for taking down even fast-moving drones, with a contract now in place to provide the Royal Navy with the weapon.

As Tom's Hardware reports, the UK government just announced the $415 million (£316 million) contract with MBDA that'll ensure the laser-directed energy weapon (LDEW) system is on board a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer by 2027 (five years ahead of the originally anticipated timeframe).

The recent test runs of DragonFire at the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Hebrides range witnessed the laser taking out drones flying at up to 650km/h (just over 400mph). The MoD tells us that this LDEW can hit a Pound coin (a little smaller than a US Quarter) from a kilometer away, which is a mind-boggling feat.

This isn't just about accuracy, though, but cost efficiency, as the laser costs around £10 per shot (approximately $13). Compare that to the price tag attached to a missile for intercepting a drone, which "cost upwards of hundreds of thousands of pounds per shot," the MoD notes. And obviously, when you consider the potential scale of drone attacks, that quickly mounts up.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, stated: "This high-power laser will see our Royal Navy at the leading edge of innovation in NATO, delivering a cutting-edge capability to help defend the UK and our allies in this new era of threat."

The contract to deploy DragonFire will involve the creation of some 590 jobs in the UK.

Joint effort

The DragonFire trials were conducted by the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, in conjunction with MBDA, Leonardo and QinetiQ – the latter two being the partners who are working with MBDA to develop the system for readiness in 2027.

In a press release from last year, MBDA explained, "The UK DragonFire programme brings together the best of UK industry. It leverages MBDA's decades of weapon system manufacturing expertise, Leonardo's position as a world-leading authority in laser technology, electro-optics, and advanced targeting, and QinetiQ's experience as the only UK company to successfully develop and safely operate high-energy laser sources in the UK and coherent beam-combining technology."

While only the first ship fit is confirmed, other Type 45 destroyers (there are six of these Daring-class anti-aircraft and anti-missile vessels in the Royal Navy fleet) are expected to get DragonFire in the future beyond 2027.

Potential drawbacks to the laser system are the weather and possible atmospheric interference, and the true test will be how DragonFire performs in real-world conditions on board that first destroyer.

The other obvious caveat here is the amount of power needed for this LDEW, which limits DragonFire to installations where there's plenty of wattage on tap, such as on board a ship, as opposed to a nimbler armored army vehicle on land – but more mobile deployments are planned eventually.

An industry team has for the first time destroyed an aerial target using a high-power shot with its DragonFire laser, the British Defence Ministry announced Friday.

The trial with the direct-energy weapon is considered a significant milestone toward the deployment of the system, possibly within five years.

Efforts to quickly field such weapons are partly driven by conflicts in Ukraine and near the Red Sea, where expensive air defense missiles are used against cheap but effective drones. The cost of operating the laser is typically less than £10 (U.S. $13) per shot, the ministry noted.

DragonFire is a £30 million technology demonstrator program revealed by the ministry’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory in 2017.

The industry team — led by missile-maker MBDA, with partners Leonardo UK and QinetiQ — is the key element in a £100 million joint investment with the ministry to develop directed-energy weapons across several programs, including radio-frequency direct-energy weapons.

The MoD said the DragonFire test results are a major step forward in bringing the laser technology into service. The latest milestone follows a series of trials announced by the ministry late last year, including the first static high-power laser firing of a U.K.-made capability as well as the demonstration of the DragonFire system’s ability to track moving air and sea targets with high accuracy.

Shimon Fhina, who directs the ministy’s strategic programs, said the recent trials proved the technology can track and engage high-end targets at range. The government was looking to “accelerate the next phase of the program,” he explained.

A spokesperson with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory said the “timing of any deployment into U.K. service depends on a number of factors, but could be within the next 5 to 10 years.”

The MoD had already announced its intent to progress directed-energy weapons into a so-called transition phase. This is meant to prepare the military for the eventual fielding of directed-energy weapons by communicating safety measures, implementing training, creating operational concepts and doctrine, and so on, the spokesperson explained.

Doug Barrie, an air warfare analyst at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank, said the U.K.’s progress on laser technology is going well. “There is a lot of work going on in countries like the U.S., Russia and China — most of it classified. But the U.K. has a long history in laser and radio-frequency work, and while we can only dream about the funding levels countries like the U.S. obtain, we [managed to squeeze] quite a lot out of our funding. It’s transitioning the technology to the marketplace that is the problem,” he said.

The British Army and the Royal Navy are each interested in using the technology for air defense. Naval News reported last year the MoD was looking at the retrofit of a 150-kilowatt-class laser directed-energy weapon for new Type 26 frigates beginning in the early 2030s.

The ministry declined to provide Defense news with technical details of the DragonFire, including its range and power levels. Media reports previously put the power level around 50 kilowatts.

“The range of DragonFire is classified, but it is a line-of-sight weapon and can engage with any visible target,” the ministry said.

The latest trial took place at a test range in Hebrides, Scotland. The DragonFire shot down a drone, according to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, but no further details about the target were available, including range, altitude and speed.

“This type of cutting-edge weaponry has the potential to revolutionise the battlespace by reducing the reliance on expensive ammunition, while also lowering the risk of collateral damage,” Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said in the ministry’s news release. “Investments with industry partners in advanced technologies like DragonFire are crucial in a highly contested world.”

Hard-kill solution to major new threat

The system is described as a hard‑kill solution intended to provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional anti‑air missiles, which typically cost hundreds of thousands of pounds per engagement. DragonFire’s value depends on sustained power generation and accurate tracking, as the weapon requires line‑of‑sight and is subject to atmospheric interference. The MoD has not disclosed the maximum engagement range or the laser’s output power during the test phase.

The UK previously tested a vehicle‑mounted radio-frequency directed energy weapon for swarm disruption and a ground-based high-energy laser demonstrator called Wolfhound, which exhibited 100% success in field trials last year. DragonFire’s shipboard role targets higher-speed aerial threats with precision, where the mobility and wide‑field effects of those systems are less applicable.

The first ship integration in 2027 will test the system’s viability under real maritime conditions, including motion, power draw, and weather effects. If those trials prove successful, additional Royal Navy fits could follow.

What does the meeting between Pope Leo XIV and King Charles III mean for Christian unity?

In a time marked by polarisation and division, an act of unity could be the antidote. That surely is a hope from today’s historic event between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, for today was the first time a Pope and a British monarch publicly prayed together.

King Charles III, as head of state but most significantly as Supreme Governor of the Church of England, accompanied by Queen Camilla, have made a two–day state visit to the Holy See. The King privately met with Pope Leo XIV in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican today marking their first meeting, with reportedly two central themes being discussed: Christian unity and care for creation.

The King then joined the Pope in the Sistine Chapel for an ecumenical prayer service – the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and the head of the Catholic Church praying together in a public display of ‘unity’. It was the first public joint prayer service between a Pope and a British monarch in over 500 years, since the Reformation in the 16th century when Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church. They were joined by clergy and choirs from both Churches, with the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell (the Primate and most senior cleric in the Church of England ahead of the enthronement of Sarah Mullaly as Archbishop of Canterbury next year) joining the Pope in leading the prayers.

There were also an exchange of titles and a visit to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the Four Major Papal Basilicas, which has a historic connection to England’s monarchy whereby previous kings of England were recognised as ‘protectors’ of the Basilica and abbey. King Charles received a Papal knighthood, and the King made Pope Leo a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. The King became a “Royal Confrater” of the adjoining Benedictine abbey in recognition of his ecumenical efforts, and the Pope became “Papal Confrater” of St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The King also received a seat, engraved with his coat of arms and a verse from the Gospel of St John in Latin ‘Ut unum sint’ (That they may be one). The chair will remain in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls for Charles and his heirs to use on future visits.

The visit holds deep historic resonance. From Henry VIII’s declaration as the supreme head of the Church of England in 1534 breaking from the Catholic Church, the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, and the subsequent persecution of Catholics in England, today’s event is monumental, albeit the groundwork had been laid over many decades. The Catholic Church and the Church of England – including through successive monarchs – have been improving their ties especially in the last decades through many local and national ecumenical efforts. In 1980, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to make a state visit to the Vatican, and she welcomed both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in state visits to the UK. For his part, the King has shown concerted efforts of an ecumenical nature. However, this visit marks the strongest steps of ecumenism yet taken between the two denominations. A complete reconciliation between the two Churches is still a long way off, but as a display of ‘unity’ in a fractured world, a powerful message was conveyed.

‘Unity’ is not a word many would describe of today’s world. We see more division and fracturing in politics, society and culture at large. However, through this visit and ecumenical service today, the Church is reminding us that division need not tear us apart, and we should live in hope ‘that they may be one’.

King Charles and Pope Leo Pray Together in Groundbreaking Moment

It was the first time in hundreds of years that the leaders of the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches prayed together, offering a public display of unity.

Nearly five centuries after King Henry VIII of England broke with the Roman Catholic Church so he could have his marriage dissolved in order to marry again (and again and again), a divorced and remarried English king prayed with the pope on Thursday in an ecumenical service at the Sistine Chapel.

The service was conducted in the same chamber where Pope Leo XIV was recently selected as head of the Roman Catholic Church. It was the first time in hundreds of years that a pontiff and a British monarch, the nominal head of the Church of England, have publicly prayed together.

The gathering was a sign of markedly improved relations between the Anglican and Catholic denominations as well as the eagerness of King Charles III to be viewed as an ecumenical leader. Queen Elizabeth II, the king’s mother, met with several popes during her reign but never publicly prayed with any of them.

The Most Rev. Stephen Cottrell, the archbishop of York, and Leo led the prayers in English and Latin accompanied by both Anglican and Catholic choirs, as the king and queen sat on gold chairs nearby.

The king and queen participated in the service as part of a state visit to the Vatican to coincide with the Jubilee, a year of penance and forgiveness that takes place every quarter century.

For Charles, the visit comes at a difficult time, as the royal family struggles to deal with new disclosures about the ties of Prince Andrew, his brother, to the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Under intense pressure from the king, Andrew gave up the use of his title, the Duke of York.

But the trip also showcases one of the king’s most longstanding causes: religious tolerance. He marked his first 100 days on the throne in 2022 by visiting a Jewish community center in London and dancing the hora at a Hanukkah party. At his coronation in 2023, he met with leaders of non-Christian faiths, among them Judaism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

Charles’s pluralistic approach has occasionally landed him in hot water. In 1994, decades before becoming king, he said he foresaw his role as a defender of faith in general, in what was seen as a nod to Britain’s growing diversity. He later clarified his remarks, saying, “While at the same time being Defender of the Faith, you can also be protector of faiths.”

In a solemn ceremony during a second ecumenical service on Thursday at the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, the king assumed the honorary title of Royal Confrater, which recognizes the historical ties between the monarchy and the church. The Vatican also designed a chair for the king and his descendants decorated with the royal coat of arms and bearing an inscription of the Latin phrase “Ut unum sint” — “That they may be one” — recognizing a shared Christian faith.

Cardinal James Harvey, archpriest of the basilica, said during the service that the significance of the king’s visit could not “be overestimated.” It represented “a soul-stirring new chapter in the long history of relations” between the two churches, he said.

Earlier in the day, the king and queen had a private audience with Leo.

The king also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state. The Vatican said in a statement that they discussed “matters of common interest” including protecting the environment and alleviating poverty.

The services were organized as a sign “of our closeness and willingness to see one another as brothers and sisters despite differences,” Reverend Martin Browne, who is part of the Vatican department that promotes Christian unity in Rome, said before the visit. “That is clearly an important sign for the world, not just in terms of the ecumenical project but for humanity in general.”

Ordinarily, the archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England, would have accompanied the king on a visit to Rome. But the Most Rev. Justin Welby resigned last November after a report said he had failed to pursue a proper investigation into claims of widespread clerical abuse of boys and young men. This month, the Right Rev. Sarah Mullally was named the first woman to occupy the role, but she is not expected to be installed officially until early next year.

The ordination of women is a dividing line between the Anglican and Catholic faiths. The Anglican Church has allowed women to be priests since the 1970s, but the Vatican permits only men to be ordained and has repeatedly postponed discussions about whether women can be ordained, even as lower-ranking church ministers known as deacons.

Archbishop Flavio Pace, secretary of the Vatican department that promotes Christian unity, acknowledged at a press briefing last week that the ordination of Anglican women was a “potential problem” between the churches. But, he added, it “is more urgent that we stay together, that we dialogue and that we continue to walk together.”

Once Archbishop-designate Mullally steps into her role, she is likely to meet Leo. “The development of having female clergy and female bishops in the Church of England is one that is recognized as a matter for the Church of England by the Catholic Church,” said the Right Rev. Anthony Ball, the archbishop of Canterbury’s representative to the Holy See.

In theory, there is no reason the pope cannot conduct future prayer services with a female archbishop of Canterbury, said Anna Rowlands, a political theologian at Durham University in England. “She will be, once installed, the head of a fellow Christian ecclesial community” that the Catholic Church has a relationship with, Professor Rowlands said.

Leo’s praying with King Charles does not represent a meeting of the minds on other issues that may divide the churches, theological experts said.

Anglican priests can be married and some Anglican churches allow openly gay priests, while the Catholic Church demands that clerics remain celibate and prohibits openly gay clergy. Divorced Catholics who have not had their marriages annulled may not remarry in a church service, while divorced Anglicans can.

“We don’t have to change each other,” said the Very Rev. Andrew McGowan, a professor of Anglican studies at the Yale Divinity School.

Experts said it was unlikely that the pope or the king would bring up divisive issues. “There’s certain topics you don’t bring up at Thanksgiving dinner,” said Rev. Thomas J. Reese, a senior analyst at Religion News Service and a longtime Vatican analyst. “You know where everybody stands, and so the effort is to see where we can work together.”

The king’s visit was originally scheduled to coincide with the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si, Francis’s groundbreaking document on the need to protect the health of the planet. Leo has spoken forcefully about the need for global action to prevent the greatest burdens of climate change from falling on the poor, and King Charles has long warned of an existential threat to humanity from rising carbon emissions.

Pope Leo and King Charles make history with first-ever joint prayer service in Sistine Chapel

King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom were received in a private audience by Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace this morning, Oct. 23, during a state visit to the Holy See. Afterward, for the first time in history, a British monarch and a pope prayed together in the Sistine Chapel in an event of great ecumenical significance.

The royal couple arrived at the Vatican in a motorcade that drove through St. Peter’s Square and the Arch of the Bells and then to the San Damaso Courtyard of the Apostolic Palace. They were given a state welcome with a guard of honor provided by the Swiss Guard, as a band played the national anthems of the United Kingdom and Vatican City State. The regent of the papal household, Msgr. Leonardo Sapienza, then escorted them to the pope’s library, where they were welcomed by Pope Leo.

Charles had met three other popes—John Paul II, Benedict and Francis—while he was Prince of Wales, and met Francis a second time after ascending to the throne; it was his and Queen Camilla’s first encounter with Pope Leo.

At the end of the audience, King Charles presented to Pope Leo representatives of the Church of England who had accompanied him. He then gave the pontiff a large silver photograph and an icon of St. Edward the Confessor, while the pope gifted him with a Vatican-made scaled version of the mosaic of “Christ Pantocrator” that is housed in the Norman Cathedral of Cefalù, Sicily.

Further, in an extraordinary exchange of honors, King Charles conferred on Pope Leo the honor of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, which is the order traditionally given to heads of state. The pope, for his part, conferred on Charles the honor of Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Vatican Order of Pope Pius IX, and on Queen Camilla the honor of Dame Grand Cross of the same order.

Following the private audience, King Charles had a meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the English-born secretary for relations with states and international organizations. The king had first met Cardinal Parolin when the cardinal attended the royal coronation ceremony in May 2023—the first papal representative to attend the coronation of a British monarch in 500 years.

The Vatican issued a statement after the royal couple had left the city-state that recalled their meeting with Pope Leo. Then, referring to “the cordial talks” at the Secretariat of State, it said that “appreciation was expressed” for “good existing bilateral relations.” It reported that they discussed “matters of common interest…such as environmental protection and the fight against poverty” and gave “particular attention…to the shared commitment to promoting peace and security in the face of global challenges.” They also reflected on “the history of the Church in the United Kingdom” and “the need to continue promoting ecumenical dialogue.”

While King Charles visited the Secretariat of State, Queen Camilla was given a guided tour of the Pauline Chapel by Dr. Barbara Jatta, the first female director of the Vatican Museums. The chapel, built between 1537 and 1540, is the official papal chapel and is also where the cardinals gather before entering a conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

Soon after midday, history was made when the royal couple entered the Sistine Chapel together, followed by Pope Leo and Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, the Anglican archbishop of York, to recite and sing together the church’s midday prayer.

As king, Charles is the supreme governor of the Church of England, and at his request, the ecumenical prayer service centered on two themes: Christian unity and care for creation. The theme of unity was highlighted by the opening hymn, the text of which was written by St. Ambrose but translated into English by St. John Henry Newman. (In 2019, the then-Prince of Wales attended Pope Francis’ canonization of the Anglican priest and scholar who became Catholic.) The ceremony’s location highlighted the theme of care for creation; the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo with nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, the best known of which depicts God stretching out his hand to create Adam.

During the ceremony, the royal couple, the pope and the archbishop sat on chairs under Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, which the artist painted between 1536 and 1541, in the years after the separation of the churches of Rome and England in 1534.

The religious service was presided over by the first American-born pope while the archbishop of York read the introductory prayer. Three choirs led the singing of hymns and psalms: the children of the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace, London, the choir of St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle and the Sistine Choir.

After praying in the Sistine Chapel, the king and pope went to the Sala Regia, a state hall between the Sistine and Pauline chapels, for a discussion on care for creation. There, they were joined by representatives from climate organizations and the business world committed to sustainable development. Alessandra Smerilli, F.M.A., the secretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, gave an introduction at the meeting. At the end of the meeting, the pope and the king exchanged orchids, a plant known for its resilience in difficult environments, as a sign of their mutual commitment to the care of creation.

St. Paul’s and another milestone

After the prayer service, the royal couple bade farewell to the pope and left the Vatican. In the afternoon, they drove to the papal basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, which is attached to a Benedictine abbey, for another ecumenical ceremony. The basilica and abbey have centuries-old links with the English monarchy, dating back to the Saxon kings who contributed to the upkeep of this ancient building over the tomb of St. Paul. By the late Middle Ages, the kings of England were regarded as the protectors of the basilica and abbey, as recalled by the insignia of the Order of the Garter that can be seen here today.

The Benedictine Abbot of St. Paul’s, Donato Ogliari, O.S.B., and the archpriest of the basilica, Cardinal James Harvey, welcomed the king and queen on their arrival and accompanied them through the Holy Door—open only during the Jubilee Year—into the basilica and escorted them to the tomb of St. Paul under the main altar.

The Benedictine abbot presided over the ceremony that included welcoming King Charles as a “Royal Confrater”—that is, a royal member of the brotherhood of St. Paul’s basilica and abbey. This is a unique honor given to King Charles with the approval of Pope Leo. The text conferring the title was read out and said the honor is bestowed “in recognition of the historic association” between the English monarchy and the basilica and abbey” and “in thanksgiving for the steps taken since the Second Vatican Council in the common ecumenical journey” by the churches of Rome and of England. Moreover, it is given “as a sign and pledge of mutual friendship and of our commitment to the fraternal task of the ecumenical movement, so that our churches, walking together, may move forward, seeking the unity for which Our Lord prayed.”

Meant as a gesture of hospitality and spiritual fellowship, the designation “Royal Confrater” reflects the ever-growing friendship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England and is also a recognition of Charles’s own efforts to bring people of faith together. A special chair was designed for him to accompany that honor; it is decorated with his royal coat of arms and the motto “Ut Unum Sint” (“That they may be one”)—words from Chapter 17 of St. John’s Gospel that are also the title of a 1995 encyclical by Pope John Paul II on the topic of ecumenism and Christian unity. He sat on this chair during the singing of vespers. After the ceremony, it will remain in the basilica.

Today’s evening prayer service concluded with the recital of the Our Father in English, and soon after, King Charles drove to the nearby Beda College, a Catholic seminary, named after the English saint Venerable Bede, for men who discern their call to the priesthood later in life. At a reception hosted at the college, he met trainee priests, ambassadors from the Commonwealth countries and British nationals working in the Vatican.

Queen Camilla, meanwhile, met Catholic sisters from the International Union of Religious Superiors General, a body set up in 1965 to promote greater collaboration between women’s religious congregations. Accompanied by the group’s new executive secretary, Roxanne Schares, S.S.N.D., she spoke with some of the sisters and learned about the work they do across the globe to support female empowerment through educational opportunities, better access to health care, sexual violence and human trafficking prevention and environmental protection.

After these last events of a truly historic state visit, the royal couple returned to England, conscious that they had laid another milestone on the road to Christian unity.

So what, exactly, is fueling stories about an all-powerful sect of celebs and gazillionaires who use spy-like protocols to keep their identities a secret?

The rise of the Illuminati

Adam Weishaupt, a Bavarian professor of canon law, started the radical Illuminati secret society in Europe in 1776 when he was 28 years old. Anti-clerical and anti-royal, the Illuminati aimed to infiltrate and upset powerful institutions. They created a plan for the global subversion of church, state, royalty, and society.

Weishaupt aimed to abolish all religions and obliterate every government so mankind could live happily in a world of equality. He foresaw the economy operating under a ‘communism of goods’ structure overseen by an enlightened (illuminated) elite over which he presided.

The Order was represented by the Owl of Minerva, which in Greek mythology traditionally accompanies Athena the virgin goddess of wisdom. Another Illuminati emblem was a dot within a circle that symbolized the all-seeing eye which belonged not to God, but to a superior Illuminati watching over the lower ranks.

The Illuminati spy structure

The Illuminati adopted antique codenames to avoid identification. Weishaupt was ‘Brother Spartacus’, named after the gladiator who headed the insurrection of slaves and kept Rome in terror for three years. Weishaupt aimed to find young zealots - using Freemason lodges as a recruiting ground - and knit them together with secrecy. Initially, anyone over 30 wasn’t trusted.

The lower ranks were divided into hierarchies of Novices, Minervals, and Illuminated Minervals, and divided into cells. Weishaupt acted as their spymaster.

“When he could not persuade them by his own firmness... he employed Jesuitical tricks, causing them to fall out with each other, setting them as spies on each other, and separating any two that he saw attached to each other, by making the one a Master of the other; and, in short, he left nothing undone that could secure his uncontrolled command,” according to John Robison, author of Proofs of a Conspiracy.

‍Recruits had to supply the names of their ancestors, relations, friends, correspondents, and enemies. They were asked to recommend appropriate people to be received into the Order and to list those who might be unfit, justifying reasons for both opinions. They were told to pay attention to the conduct of other men around them and report back weekly about public or private occurrences.

The threat of death

After three years of one-on-one study with their Illuminati tutor, recruits were asked to sign an oath to uphold the society’s goals upon the punishment of death.

“A drawn sword is then pointed at his breast, and he is asked: ‘Will you be obedient to the commands of your Superiors?’ He is threatened with unavoidable vengeance, from which no potentate [monarch/ruler] can defend him if he should ever betray the Order,” Robison said.

Plans were underway for two sisterhoods, he added, both subservient to male Illuminati - one sisterhood made up of women of virtue, the other of women ‘who fly out of the common track of prudish manners’. Neither sisterhood was to know about the other. ‍

The power of the Illuminati

The Barvarian Illuminati insinuated themselves into public offices and courts of justice. Estimates about the group’s size vary greatly - some put the figure at 650, others at 2,500 - but, eventually, the secret society was exposed and persecuted. Documents found in the homes of Illuminati like diplomat Franx Xavier von Zwack confirmed their dreams of world domination.

The Duke of Bavaria, Karl Theodor, banned secret societies in In 1785 and instituted punishments for anyone who joined them. But did the Illuminati really dissolve?

Robison and Abbé Augustin Barruel, authors of Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism, argue that the Illuminati survived, having infiltrated a Berlin literary society and Masonic lodges. They point out that Weishaupt was banished but not imprisoned, so he carried on writing and working. Barruel even promoted a theory that secret societies, including the Illuminati, were behind the French Revolution. ‍

The American Illuminati

By 1798, fears about the dangerous sect had reached the US. George Washington wrote an open letter indicating the US had avoided the Illuminati threat, but just the mention of the secret society helped revive the topic and the fear.

Rumors of secret alliances and double-crossings plagued early-American elections.

The Illuminati Eye of Providence

Many Illuminati-watchers in America believe that the ‘Eye of Providence’ - the eye-in-a-triangle found on the back of the US dollar bill and Great Seal of the United States - is an Illuminati symbol linking the European sect to the highest echelons of US government and corridors of power. It appears on numerous churches and Masonic buildings worldwide and is linked to Freemasonry.

In fact, the all-knowing eye was originally a symbol of Christianity, found in religious art of the Renaissance period to represent God, such as in Pontormo’s Supper at Emmaus. Noone is quite certain who invented it, but it appears to be tied to religious motifs as the triangle is a symbol of the Christian Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But what about the eye?

Ancient Egyptians used the detached eye as a motif. Among the most famous of all Egyptian symbols is the Eye of Horus.

Illuminati

Illuminati, designation in use from the 15th century, assumed by or applied to various groups of persons who claimed to be unusually enlightened. The word is the plural of the Latin illuminatus (“revealed” or “enlightened”).

Early Illuminati

According to adherents, the source of the “light” was viewed as being directly communicated from a higher source or due to a clarified and exalted condition of the human intelligence. To the former class belong the Alumbrados (Spanish: “enlightened”) of Spain.

Spanish historian Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo first finds the name about 1492 (in the form aluminados, 1498) but traces them back to a gnostic origin and thinks their views were promoted in Spain through influences from Italy. One of their earliest leaders—indeed, some scholars style her as a “pre-Alumbrado”—was María de Santo Domingo, who came to be known as La Beata de Piedrahita. She was a labourer’s daughter, born in Aldeanueva, south of Salamanca, about 1485. She joined the Dominican order as a teenager and soon achieved renown as a prophet and mystic who could converse directly with Jesus Christ and the Virgin. Ferdinand of Aragon invited her to his court, and he became convinced of the sincerity of her visions. The Dominicans appealed to Pope Julius II for guidance, and a series of trials were convened under the auspices of the Inquisition. Her patrons, which by then included not only Ferdinand but also Francisco Cardenal Jiménez de Cisneros and the duke of Alba, ensured that no decision was taken against her, and she was cleared in 1510.

St. Ignatius of Loyola, while studying at Salamanca (1527), was brought before an ecclesiastical commission on a charge of sympathy with the Alumbrados, but he escaped with an admonition. Others were not so fortunate. In 1529 a congregation of unlettered adherents at Toledo was visited with scourging and imprisonment. Greater rigours followed, and for about a century the Alumbrados afforded many victims to the Inquisition, especially at Córdoba.

The movement (under the name of Illuminés) seems to have reached France from Seville in 1623. It attained some prominence in Picardy when joined (1634) by Pierre Guérin, curé of Saint-Georges de Roye, whose followers, known as Guerinets, were suppressed in 1635. Another body of Illuminés surfaced in the south of France in 1722 and appears to have lingered till 1794, having affinities with those known contemporaneously as “French Prophets,” an offshoot of the Protestant militant Camisards.

Of a different class were the Rosicrucians, who claimed to have originated in 1422 but achieved public notice in 1537. Their teachings combined something of Egyptian Hermetism, Christian gnosticism, Jewish Kabbala, alchemy, and a variety of other occult beliefs and practices. The earliest extant writing which mentions the Rosicrucian order was the Fama Fraternitatis, first published in 1614 but probably circulated in manuscript form somewhat earlier than this. It recounts the journey of the reputed founder of the movement, Christian Rosenkreuz, to Damascus, Damcar (a legendary hidden city in Arabia), Egypt, and Fès, where he was well received and came into possession of much secret wisdom. He returned finally to Germany, where he chose three others to whom he imparted this wisdom and thus founded the order. Later the number was increased to eight, who separated, each going to a separate country. One of the six articles of agreement they adopted was that the fraternity should remain secret for 100 years. At the end of 120 years the secret burial place and the perfectly preserved body of the founder were discovered by one of the then members of the order, along with certain documents and symbols held in very high esteem by Rosicrucians. The sacred vault was re-covered, the members of the order dispersed, and the location of the vault was lost to history. The Fama ends with an invitation to “some few” to join the fraternity. Among those believed to have been associated with the order were German alchemist Michael Maier, British physician Robert Fludd, and British philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon.

The Bavarian illuminati

Perhaps the group most closely associated with the name illuminati was a short-lived movement of republican free thought founded on May Day 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, professor of canon law at Ingolstadt and a former Jesuit. The members of this secret society called themselves “Perfectibilists.” Their founder’s aim was to replace Christianity with a religion of reason, as later did the revolutionaries of France and the 19th-century positivist philosopher Auguste Comte. The order was organized along Jesuit lines and kept internal discipline and a system of mutual surveillance based on that model. Its members pledged obedience to their superiors and were divided into three main classes: the first included “novices,” “minervals,” and “lesser illuminati”; the second consisted of freemasons (“ordinary,” “Scottish,” and “Scottish knights”); and the third or “mystery” class comprised two grades of “priest” and “regent” as well as “magus” and “king.”

Beginning with a narrow circle of disciples carefully selected from among his own students, Weishaupt gradually extended his recruitment efforts from Ingolstadt to Eichstätt, Freising, Munich, and elsewhere, with special attention being given to the enlistment of young men of wealth, rank, and social importance. From 1778 onward Weishaupt’s illuminati began to make contact with various Masonic lodges, where, under the impulse of Adolf Franz Friedrich, Freiherr von Knigge, one of their chief converts, they often managed to gain a commanding position, It was to Knigge that the society was indebted for the extremely elaborate constitution (never, however, actually realized) as well as its internal communication system. Each member of the order had given him a special name, generally classical, by which he alone was addressed in official writing (Weishaupt was referred to as Spartacus while Knigge was Philo). All internal correspondence was conducted in cipher, and to increase the mystification, towns and provinces were invested with new and altogether arbitrary designations.

At its period of greatest development, Weishaupt’s “Bavarian Illuminati” included in its operations a very wide area, extending from Italy to Denmark and from Warsaw to Paris; at no time, however, do its numbers appear to have exceeded 2,000. The order and its doctrines appealed to literary giants such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Johann Gottfried von Herder as well as the dukes Ernest II of Gotha and Charles Augustus of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Such notables were claimed as members although it is questionable if they were actually so. Weishaupt’s illuminati were believed to have included astronomer Johann Bode, writer and bookseller Friedrich Nicolai, philosopher Friedrich Jacobi, and poet Friedrich Leopold, Graf zu Stolberg-Stolberg.

Secret societies of this kind fitted in with the idea of benevolent despotism as a vehicle for the Enlightenment, as Goethe shows in Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship. The movement suffered from internal dissension and was ultimately banned by an edict of the Bavarian government in 1785. Some members were imprisoned, while others were driven from their homes. Weishaupt was stripped of his chair at Ingolstadt and banished from Bavaria. After 1785 the historical record contains no further activities of Weishaupt’s illuminati, but the order figured prominently in conspiracy theories for centuries after its disbanding. It was credited with activities ranging from the instigation of the French Revolution to the assassination of U.S. Pres. John F. Kennedy, and the notion of an all-knowing cabal of ancient masters remained a powerful image in the popular consciousness into the 21st century.

Later illuminati

After the suppression of Weishaupt’s order, the title illuminati was given to the French Martinists, founded in 1754 by Martinez Pasqualis and propagated by Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin. By 1790 Martinism had been spread to Russia by Johann Georg Schwarz and Nikolay Novikov. Both strains of “illuminated” Martinism included elements of Kabbalism and Christian mysticism, imbibing ideas from Jakob Böhme and Emanuel Swedenborg.

The Jesuits were the most influential group in Germany, despite having been suppressed in other countries due to supposed occult practices and subversive leanings.

In 1773, Weishaupt became chairman of natural and canon law at the University of Ingolstadt, which was still under strong Jesuit dominance. By then, Weishaupt had warmed to emerging Enlightenment philosophies that were in direct opposition to Jesuit beliefs and behaviors centered on control and supremacy. He quickly became convinced that the world would benefit from the overthrow of all government and religious institutions. His goal was to replace the institutional establishment with members from a global, selective, and secretive committee that combined spiritualism and politics under a collective sphere of influence which fostered morality and virtue over the perceived decadence and dishonesty permeating society.

To achieve his vision, Weishaupt sought to combine what he had learned from the Jesuits about power and persuasion with his knowledge of increasingly popular occultism. He considered trying to infiltrate the Freemasons with his ideas but ultimately decided the best course of action would be to create his own secret society with select members who would embrace and propagate his views. After the Order of the Illuminati was outlawed—and many believe well before that time—members of the group may have integrated into the Freemason organization, which continues to operate in contemporary times. Modern Masons position themselves as members of a selective interest group that promotes equality and service in society.

Some researchers assert that the Illuminati can trace its roots much further back than eighteenth-century Bavaria. The Order of the Illuminati originating in eighteenth-century Bavaria was somewhat a product of its times. At that period in history, Europe was entrenched in what is known today as the Age of Enlightenment. Starting late in the seventeenth century many of Europe’s intellectual elite became part of a cultural movement that sought to challenge the status quo in society by emphasizing knowledge over superstition and tradition. In much the same way, the Order of the Illuminati was made up of freethinking leaders who sought to instigate a departure from the political and cultural norms of the day through an orchestrated web of influence, authority, and action.

Weishaupt’s Illuminati became very popular very quickly, exploding from its original five members in Bavaria to some 2,000 active followers across Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Sweden by the time it was forced to disband just nine years later. Each member of the order—many of whom are believed to have been recruited from practicing Masonic groups—was required to take a vow of secrecy and pledge unwavering obedience to higher-ranking members of the organization.

There were three main levels of authority within the original Illuminati membership base: Novice, Minerval, and Illuminated Minerval. Entry-level (Novice) members of the order were new recruits who had been enticed by promises of enhanced wisdom, personal betterment, and insight into the occult. Novices were shown some of the workings of the order’s Jesuit-like, hierarchical organization but were not made privy to the Illuminati’s political aspirations or intricate power plays.

A Novice who proved to be dedicated to the order and worthy of advancement was promoted to the next level of membership, Minerval. At this second tier of membership, indoctrination into the Order of the Illuminati’s spiritual principles began through formal instruction. Members at the Minerval level were given the privilege to meet and engage in discussions with some of the superior-ranking members of the order, which acted as a strong motivator for new initiates.

Select members from the Minerval class were elevated to the rank of Illuminated Minerval. These elite members were given specific tasks to complete within the order to prepare them for making a mark for the Illuminati cause in the outside world. Toward that end, Illuminated Minervals were educated about human nature and ways to direct it in support of the order’s cause. Each Illuminated Minerval was charged with overseeing a small group of Minervals and guiding them along the Illuminati path.

Additional higher levels that mirrored those of the Freemason brotherhood were added to the Illuminati hierarchy after a German diplomat named Adolf Franz Friederich Knigge joined Weishaupt’s order around 1780. Knigge had significant ties to the Freemasons and is said to have helped pave the way for integration between the Masonic system and the Illuminati.

There are those today who believe that the Order of the Illuminati has been perpetuated through fraternal organizations for centuries. According to some, several key historical events have been driven by the workings of the Illuminati, including the French and American Revolutions, both world wars, and even the rise of communism. The Illuminati and Modern Popular Culture

Theories of Illuminati influence have surfaced within the entertainment world and have spread throughout the United States via the ubiquitous and increasingly accessible platforms available through the Internet. In its modern form, the Illuminati has also become associated with Satan and dark magic. These accusations have infiltrated almost every aspect of popular culture, including literature, art, television, and films. Author Dan Brown's novel Angels & Demons, the forerunner to his worldwide bestseller The Da Vinci Code, even features a version of the Illuminati and a fictional plot by the society to destroy its enemy, the Catholic Church.

Perhaps the cultural arena most saturated with suspected Illuminati presence has become the music industry. Successful musicians in genres ranging from popular music to rap have been accused of affiliations with the supposedly defunct society. Some believe that the increased number of lyrics and performances that seem to reference or symbolize the group and its philosophy indicates that the music industry has actually come under the control of the Illuminati. In response to insinuations of her involvement, iconic singer Madonna included a song titled "Illuminati" on a 2015 album, explaining her definition of the society and who belonged. After vocalist and former Christian Katy Perry performed during the halftime show of the Super Bowl early that year in front of millions of fans and viewers, conspiracy theorists took to the Internet to continue labelling her as an Illuminati, citing everything from her lyrics to props and stage design. Such discussions further prove that at least the idea of the Illuminati has and will remain in the cultural conscience.

There really was a secret society called the Illuminati that aimed to create a New World Order.

1. The Illuminati were founded in 1776 by a disgruntled scholar.

He was a 28-year-old called Adam Weishaupt, a professor at the University of Ingolstadt in Bavaria. This era was a high point of the Enlightenment in Europe, which gave rise to a new kind of rational, secular thought. Weishaupt was becoming increasingly frustrated with the control that former Jesuit priests were exerting, not only on the university but on his career, he decided that in order to give expression to the kind of enlightenment that he wanted to see percolate throughout Germany and throughout the world, he would form a secret society, within which he and his friends and his students will swap ideas about how to change the world in a way that was coherent with his enlightened values.

2. It began as a small project.

In fact, there were only five people at the organisation's first meeting. And you might well think, Well, isn't this just basically a reading club? But Weishaupt is very clear. There is some kind of Messianic complex within him, and he really does want to cause a revolution in the way that the world operates.

3. They really did recruit famous names.

The Illuminati reached its high point in the early 1780s. At this time there was a crisis in Freemasonry in Germany, and so many educated, influential intellectuals began to look for other venues for an intellectual society. It's absolutely true that Wolfgang Goethe in Weimar was a member of the Illuminati. There is strong but perhaps circumstantial evidence that both Friedrich Schiller and Mozart were members as well. That does not mean that they were plotting to overthrow all worldly governments and to destroy religion. It does mean, however, that they saw in the Illuminati the kinds of enlightened, rational ideas that were so appealing to them and to men of their ilk.

4. They used Freemason lodges as meeting places.

They were a means of meeting a pool of candidates who would appear to be amenable to their ideas. They were also a means of infiltrating different societies or different governments. So for example, if you join a Freemasons lodge in Bavaria, that lodge will have a connection to one in the Rhineland, and it will have connections to a lodge in Prussia. So it's by these means that Illuminati ideas begin to spread throughout Germany.

5. There were no women members.

But perversely, whenever the conspiracy theory takes off, one of the accusations which is leveled at the Illuminati is that they were creating ‘Illuminata’, and that it was the seduction of the supposedly weaker sex that was allowing them to infiltrate world governments through the corruption of the wives, mothers and sisters of the powerful men.

6. By 1780, the Illuminati had at least 1,500 members.

However, that’s when things began to fall apart for the society. In Munich – probably the most important center for Illuminati activity – they began to get “too confident”. They're talking a little bit too openly about what they're doing and what their plans are. The Duchy of Bavaria and the Bavarian State Government are intensely conservative and intensely Catholic, and they begin to worry about this secret society. The Duke of Bavaria then issues a series of edicts in 1785 and 1786 and the house of one of the senior Illuminatus was raided. They found documents which they were keeping on hand the whole time, and everything was exposed. Members started to leave the society, and by 1786, the first iteration of the Illuminati was more or less finished.

7. It was believed the Illuminati were behind the French Revolution.

It was perhaps the world’s first conspiracy theory, and was fomented by Abbé Augustin Barruel, a staunchly conservative French priest and a respected man of letters. In 1797, Barruel wrote a four part memoir of the history of Jacobinism, within which he attributed the downfall of the French Ancien régime and the carnage of the last eight years to the Illuminati. At the very same time, John Robison – a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment – wrote something very similar, albeit for different reasons. Robison is trying to defend Freemasonry from the slur of being associated with the French revolution because he's a Freemason himself. Barruel is just attacking everything that the revolution stands for. So in Britain, in 1797 and 1798, these two books allege the same thing: that the Illuminati were the conspiracy behind the French Revolution.

8. The conspiracy theory grew during the Russian Revolution in the early 20th century.

While the conspiracy theory has partly survived due to its links to the mythology of the founding fathers in America, it was events in Russia that led to the Illuminati being the “monster” theory it became. Like the French Revolution, this is an equally traumatic, dramatic event. The Russian monarchy and the Russian Empire is replaced with its polar opposite, a Bolshevik atheist government. We then have people on both sides of the Atlantic in the Anglophone world attempting to explain this revolution by reference to forces which they apparently can't see or understand. And this is the really troubling moment, because when people like Nesta Webster, a columnist for British newspapers in London in the late 1910s and 20s, tries to explain this new revolution, she melds together the Illuminati conspiracy theory with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. And this is where we get the birth of the antisemitic Illuminati conspiracy theory.
